Secrets of a Yummy Mummy

Packing A Hospital Bag

A properly packed hospital bag will make your labour and hospital stay more comfortable.  If you are having a c-section then you know your delivery date in advance.  If you are planning a natural birth you should have your hospital bag packed at 35 weeks.  Here’s my list for a private hospital stay:

Nursing PJ’s or Nightie – during labour and delivery you will wear a standard hospital gown but during your stay you will likely be receiving guests so you’ll need something that is nice enough but comfortable and enables you to nurse easily.  Nursing PJ’s by Olian Maternity include bottoms, nursing top, robe and matching baby onesie.

Comfortable Maternity/Nursing Clothes – if you don’t want to wear sleepwear then a comfortable maternity outfit will work.  LA Made’s Noah Pants are loose fitting cotton/lycra trousers with a foldover waist which are perfect if you’ve had a c-section.  Everly Grey’s Lizzie Nursing Top is made of comfortable fabric and is available in green or navy.  Save the Glamourmom Nursing Tanks for after you arrive home and have established a good breast feeding routine.

Milk Producing Tea – I have always spent the beginning days worrying about my milk coming in so I’ve sipped More Milk Please Sippin’ Tea from the Spoiled Mama.  It’s 100% organic and tastes yummy.

Nipple Balm – this is an absolute must!  There are some organic ones available like Earth Mama Angel Baby or you could go with the old favorite Lansinoh but I find it too sticky.

Tummy Butter or Oil – you should continue massaging oil and cream into your tummy for a month after birth to ensure you don’t get stretch marks.  The Spoiled Mama Tummy Butter and Bump Gloss are my favorites because they are organic and lightly fragranced with essential oil.

Socks & Sweaters – hospitals tend to keep the temperature quite low so I have always needed socks and a sweater even in the height of Hong Kong’s summer.  A cardi or wrap is more suitable than a pullover.

Lip Balm

Evian Spray – you might like a refreshing spray during labour.

Mobile Phone and charger – I spent a lot of time during my hospital stay texting with friends.

Magazines, DVD’s, IPad – anything to help you pass the time and relax.  I had a portable DVD player that was a lifesaver.  Don’t forget chargers.

Hairbands

Digital Camera with charger

Outfit to go home in – you’ll still be wearing your maternity clothes as it will take time for your tummy to go down.

Nursing bras – 2 should be enough.

Nursing pads

Toiletries – your stay will last anywhere from 3-5 days and it’s always nice to be using your own products rather than those provided by the hospital.

Not-so-nice undies – Don’t bother bringing your favorite pair because they will be ruined.  Think cotton, black and comfortable.

Eye masks & ear plugs – If you don’t have a private room you might be dealing with a noisy neighbour.

It’s not necessary to pack anything for baby as it’s usually all provided by the hospital but it is best to call in advance to confirm.  Just remember to arrange an infant car seat for the journey home.

Must-have Basics for Breastfeeding

I wish someone would have told me how difficult breastfeeding can be when I was having my first baby.  I thought it would be a walk in the park and it was anything but.  The sad truth is that some women find it incredibly difficult and I was one of them.  I’m not sure anything really helps except a huge amount of patience and persistance but here are a few must-have’s to help you along.

1.   Herbal Tea – The jury is still out on milk stimulating herbal teas but it’s one of those things that can’t hurt to try if you’re having difficulties.  There are a number of different herbs that are said to help your breasts produce milk but Fenugreek seems to be the most effective and should be the main ingredient.  The Spoiled Mama‘s More Milk Please Sippin’ Tea is made from 100% organic ingredients and is said to increase breast milk supply within hours of use.

2.   Nursing Cover – One of the most useful items to purchase is a nursing cover.  I sometimes see women struggling with a scarf or something similar when a nursing cover would make life so much easier at minimum cost.  The best ones are made from thin cotton maternial with an adjustable strap to go around your neck and a  stiff front neckline that gives you a full view of your nursing baby.  Udder Covers makes super stylish ones in 6 different patterns that won’t hurt the pocketbook.

3.   Glamourmom Tank – The Glamourmom tank is a must-have for all mums who have established a good breastfeeding routine with their baby.  Glamoumom tanks offer full support with easy breast access all while keeping the belly fully covered.  Perfect on their own or under a sweater or flowing top.

4.   Nursing Bras & Nightwear – Gone are the days of plain Jane nursing bras and underwear and not a moment too soon.  Just because you might not feel your sexiest doesn’t mean you should go the route of frumpy undergarments.  Belabumbum is loved by many celebrities mums and with good reason and the nursing bras are so comfortable you can wear them during pregnancy.

How to wear this season’s maternity frocks with style you ask?  Ensure your accessories compliment the outfit and the occasion.

Stephanie Schell Keyhole 2-Way Dress

This Stephanie Schell Keyhole 2-Way dress is a statement “event piece” so it’s important to ensure your accessories are simple and elegant. For a glamorous night out on the town try a thin gold bangle and a pair of black Louboutin’s (if your balance is still there).

F.E.M by Tbags Maxi Dress

This season there is a trend towards over-sized accessories and these lend themselves well to the maxi dress.  Try an over-sized bangle or two and a pair of T-bar sandals for a relaxed summer feel.

Jules & Jim Wrap Belt w/ LA Made Emmy Dress

A statement belt dresses up any outfit.  This simple LA Made day dress transforms into a stylish evening frock with this Jules & Jim Wrap Belt.  Throw on some strappy heels to complete the look.

Diaper Bags 101

Nest Mercer Leather Diaper Bag

Nest Mercer Leather Diaper Bag

All mums-to-be have found themselves on the quest to find the perfect diaper bag.  But what are the prerequisites?  Big?  Small?  Practical?  Stylish?  It’s a pretty personal purchase so I’ll review what I look for to make my baby toting life a whole lot easier.

  1. Lots of compartments – Let’s face it; you’ll be carrying around a myriad of stuff.  Perhaps more than you have ever carried before and if you are a queen of organization like me you’ll need a lot of compartments.  Some to hold diapers and wipes, some to hold bottles, and some to hold other items like toys & snacks.  Perhaps the most important thing for me is a compartment where I can actually put all my stuff because I refuse to carry a purse and a diaper bag.
  2. Large changing pad – It’s always nice to have a large padded changing pad that comes with the bag so you don’t have to worry about forgetting this useful item.
  3. Durable and waterproof lining – You’ll soon find that your diaper bag will take more abuse than any other bag you have.  There will be spills, spills and more spills so a waterproof lining is a necessity.  It is also great if the lining is in a bright contrast colour to make it easier to find things inside.
  4. If you’re like me and choose fashion over function splurge on something leather with a removable lining.  That way once you’re done carrying  diapers you can actually use it as a purse.

Notable brands include Nest, Jimeale, Storksac, OiOi.
